Nick and his husband, Keletso Makofane, disseminate the RESPND-MI team's findings about mpox on CBS News.

Meet Nick.

Nicholas J. Diamond studies to practice civil rights, labor, and employment law at The City University of New York School of Law, bringing a decade of international experience in public health. The President of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) recently appointed Nick to serve on the NYSBA Communications & Publications Committee. He is the communications chair of the NYSBA LGBTQ+ Law Section, and he sits on the New York City Bar Association Labor & Employment Law Committee. Nick is a legal intern at Goddard Law PLLC, whose labor and employment litigation practice seeks equality in the workplace.

As co-investigator of RESPND-MI, he partnered with an agency on a health education and communications campaign that won a national award for responding to an mpox outbreak in New York City’s queer and trans communities. Nick co-developed briefs advising city, state, and federal governments on health policy and communications, and he testified as an expert witness at the U.S. Department of Justice. As managing editor of Public Health Post, he expanded readership, earning a reference from Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign. Nick lectured as a guest speaker and taught as an adjunct instructor of public health at colleges and universities across the country.

His work appears in The New York Times, The Associated Press, New York Magazine, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Hill, U.S. News & World Report, CBS News, NBC News, and National Public Radio, as well as in three books: Pained: Uncomfortable Conversations about the Public's Health (Oxford University Press), The Picture of Health (APHA Press), and The Turning Point: Reflections on a Pandemic (Oxford University Press). Nick has published in Harvard Public Health Magazine, Harvard Medicine News, POZ, The Body, PLOS Global Public Health, Governing Magazine, and Innovators Magazine.

He sparked his public health career in Dakar, Senegal, where he conducted interviews as a graduate student for a series of articles on LGBTQ+ health. Nick sparked his legal career after years of community organizing, building a tenant association and filing pro se in New York City Housing Court against their landlord as an action for required repairs. He holds a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in African Studies from Boston University. Nick is proficient in French and conversant in Wolof.

He lives in Harlem with his husband, Keletso Makofane, and their dog, Brooklyn.

Recent Projects.

Nick studies to practice civil rights, labor, and employment law at The City University of New York School of Law, bringing a decade of international experience in public health. He serves on CUNY Law Review and Moot Court, as well as a contributing writer for CUNY Chronicle, a publication housed at CUNY School of Law that amplifies the diverse voices, talents, and perspectives of the law school community.

At The National LGBTQ+ Bar Association’s Lavender Law Conference, Nick moderated "Love, Law, Art, and Activism in the Time of Mpox.” Panelists Asa Radix, MD, PhD, MPH (Callen-Lorde Community Health Center), Jennifer Barnes-Balenciaga (New York City Commission on Gender Equity), and Allie Bohm (New York Civil Liberties Union) sat in a fireside chat discussing New York Public Health Law § 2307, analyzing the REPEAL STI Discrimination Act, and exploring the intersections between law, art, and activism during a public health emergency in queer and trans communities. Also joining as a panelist was Ryan Jamaal Swain, the breakout star of FX’s award-winning show Pose.

As a consultant, Nick created high-impact strategies and content for clients, such as Grindr.

MPX NYC is a campaign of Rapid Epidemiologic Study of Prevalence, Network, and Demographics of Mpox Infection (RESPND-MI), an anonymous, online survey that collected information on the social and spatial networks connecting queer and trans people in New York City. As Co-Investigator in partnership with an agency, Nick oversaw a multilingual campaign across websites, newsletters, social media, press, and out-of-home ads, which won a national award. Additionally, he administered the weekly RESPND-MI LGBTQ+ Community Forum, supported development to fundraise $150,000, and coordinated press outreach to place releases and thought leadership in news media. He also co-developed health education materials and policy briefs to advise city, state, and federal governments on the response to mpox.

Public Health Post (PHP) is a publication that translates peer-reviewed literature for an audience of journalists, policymakers, and public health professionals. As Managing Editor, Nick not only refreshed the publication’s look and feel and helped to grow readership, he also launched a podcast series with public health influencers. He has contributed to PHP as a guest author for a decade.
